Eli Falls Backward

He had heard the news. He fell from his chair. He was ninety-eight years old and heavy.

📖Based on 1 Samuel 4:18

He was ninety-eight years old.

His eyes were fixed and he could not see.

He sat beside the road, watching.

His heart trembled for the ark of God.

The battle had gone badly.

Thirty thousand Israelite foot soldiers had died.

The Philistines had captured the ark of God.

A man of Benjamin ran from the battle and came to Shiloh the same day.

When he came, Eli was sitting on his seat watching by the road.

His heart trembling for the ark.

When the man came into the city and told what had happened, all the city cried out.

Eli heard the sound of the outcry.

He asked what this uproar meant.

The man hurried and came and told Eli.

He said: Israel has fled before the Philistines.

There has also been a great defeat among the people.

Your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead.

And the ark of God has been captured.

When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate.

His neck was broken and he died.

For the man was old and heavy.

He had judged Israel forty years.

His sons were what they were.

He had known it for years.

He had spoken to them.

He had heard the prophecy against his house.

He had perhaps made peace with the sentence on his sons.

But the ark.

The ark undid him.

He fell backward at the news of it.

Not the deaths.

The capture.

And he died with that news as his last moment.

The thing his sons had treated carelessly.

Had been taken.

He died facing it.

Scripture — 1 Samuel 4:18

"And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years."

Reflection

›

The sons died and he held on. It was the news about the ark that broke him. He still knew what was sacred even when his sons did not.

›

He had failed to stop his sons from treating the holy carelessly. The consequence outlasted him.
