The Guilt They Carried Twenty Years

They had forgotten about it. Then the trouble came and they remembered.

📖Based on Genesis 42:21

They hadn't seen him in over twenty years.

They had sold him for twenty pieces of silver.

They had dipped his coat in blood.

They had watched their father grieve himself thin.

They had kept the secret.

The famine was severe.

Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain.

The governor of Egypt was the one selling it.

They bowed before him.

He recognized them immediately.

He spoke harshly to them.

Where do you come from?

He accused them of being spies.

He demanded they bring their youngest brother as proof of their story.

He put them in custody for three days.

On the third day, he changed the terms. One would stay. The rest would go.

They said to one another: Truly we are guilty concerning our brother.

We saw the distress of his soul when he begged us and we did not listen.

That is why this distress has come upon us.

They hadn't spoken about it in twenty years.

It had sat inside them the whole time.

The secret that did not dissolve.

That surfaced the moment the pressure came.

Reuben said: Did I not tell you not to sin against the boy?

But you did not listen.

So now there comes a reckoning for his blood.

They did not know that the governor spoke Hebrew.

That he understood every word.

That the man speaking harshly to them in Egyptian was their brother.

Joseph turned away from them and wept.

He wept before he turned back and spoke to them.

He had heard them say what they had buried for twenty years.

He had watched them carry it in.

The guilt.

Intact.

Still there.

After all that time.

Scripture — Genesis 42:21

"And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us."

Reflection

›

They remembered the sound of his distress. After twenty years. Some things don't dim with time — they wait.

›

Joseph heard the confession before they knew who he was. He wept before he spoke. That sequence matters.
