She Looked Back

They had been told not to look. She looked.

📖Based on Genesis 19:26

The angels had come to the house the night before.

They had stayed with Lot.

In the morning they urged him to hurry.

Take your wife. Take your daughters.

Leave now or you will be swept away in the punishment of the city.

He hesitated.

The men took hold of his hand. His wife's hand. His daughters' hands.

They led them out of the city.

The LORD was merciful to them.

Outside the city, an angel said: Flee for your life. Do not look back.

Do not stop anywhere in the valley.

Escape to the hills or you will be swept away.

They ran.

By the time they reached the small town of Zoar, the sun had risen.

The LORD rained sulfur and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah.

He overthrew those cities.

All the valley.

All the inhabitants.

Everything that grew from the ground.

Lot's wife, behind him, looked back.

And she became a pillar of salt.

That is all the text says.

No hesitation. No description. No internal monologue.

She looked. She became salt.

What she was looking back at is not named.

Her home. Her friends. Her life.

The things she had built.

The people she had known.

The city that had been familiar.

Whatever it was, it was enough to make her turn.

One look.

One moment of turning back toward what was already burning.

And she was gone.

Jesus would later use her name as a warning.

Remember Lot's wife.

Three words.

He didn't need more than that.

Scripture — Genesis 19:26

"But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt."

Reflection

›

The instruction was clear and she had heard it. The look was not ignorance — it was a choice.

›

Jesus said remember her. Not as a tragedy. As a warning about what it costs to turn back toward what God said to leave.
