Midnight. Backs bleeding. Feet in stocks. And they were singing.
📖Based on Acts 16:25
They had been stripped and beaten with rods.
Many stripes. The text is plain about that.
Then thrown into the inner prison. The deepest cell.
Their feet fastened in stocks.
At midnight.
Paul and Silas prayed.
And sang praises to God.
Not quietly. The prisoners heard them.
Other prisoners — people with their own reasons to be miserable — lay in the dark and listened to two bleeding men singing.
Then a great earthquake.
It shook the foundations of the prison.
Every door opened immediately.
Every chain fell loose.
The jailer woke up. He saw the doors open. He drew his sword to kill himself because he assumed the prisoners had escaped and he would be executed for it.
Paul shouted from inside: Do yourself no harm. We are all here.
All of them.
Every door open. Every chain loose. A way out for everyone.
And no one left.
The jailer called for lights and came in trembling.
He fell at the feet of Paul and Silas.
He asked: Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
They had been there one night.
They had not preached to him. Had not sought an audience with him.
They had just prayed and sung in the dark with bleeding backs.
And by morning, the jailer and his entire household had been baptized.
And the jailer set food before them.
And rejoiced.
Along with his household.
Because he now believed.

Reflection
›
The earthquake came after the singing. The praise was not a result of the miracle — it preceded it.
›
They stayed when the doors opened. That choice said more than any sermon could.
