And the crowd heard it differently.📖Based on Matthew 3:17John had been baptizing in the Jordan. He had said someone was coming after him whose sandals he was not fit to carry.Jesus came to be baptized.John tried to prevent it. He said he needed to be baptized by Jesus, not the other way.Jesus said: Permit it for now. It is fitting to fulfill all righteousness.John permitted it.Jesus was baptized and came up from the water. And behold, the heavens were opened. He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him.And a voice from heaven said:This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.Three simultaneous things.Heaven opened. Spirit descended. Father spoke. In the gospel of John, when a different crowd later hears a voice from heaven, the text says some said it thundered.Others said an angel spoke. The same sound heard differently by different ears. The disciples at the baptism were not yet disciples. They were bystanders. We don't know what they heard or saw.We know what John recorded. What Matthew recorded. What Luke recorded. Each account slightly different in emphasis. All pointing to the same moment.A man comes up out of the water. The sky opens.Something like a dove settles.A voice speaks three things: relationship, identity, and pleasure. This is my Son.Beloved.I am well pleased.Thirty years of ordinary life. And then the sky opened above it and the Father named it.Scripture — Matthew 3:17"And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."Reflection›The declaration came before his ministry, not after. He was beloved before he performed a single miracle.›Some people heard thunder and some heard a voice. The same reality, received according to the capacity to hear.baptismdovevoiceFatherbelovedShare This StoryShare on WhatsApp🔗 Copy Link← Previous storyJonah Beneath the GourdNext story →Ruth on the Threshing FloorMore from this series: all biblical mysteries · all Bible stories
