The Fourth Man

Three men went in. The king saw four walking.

📖Based on Daniel 3:25

The king had made the furnace seven times hotter than normal.

Seven times.

The soldiers who threw the three men in died from the heat before they could step back.

The king watched from his seat.

He expected to see them fall. Expected to see three bodies crumple.

Instead he stood up.

He rose from his throne because what he was seeing didn't match what he had ordered.

He called to his counsellors: Did we not cast three men bound into the fire?

They said yes.

He said: I see four men loose. Walking in the middle of the fire.

Not screaming. Not falling. Walking.

And the fourth, he said, was like the Son of God.

Nebuchadnezzar — who worshipped his own golden image, who had built this furnace himself — said those words.

Like the Son of God.

He didn't know exactly what he was saying. But he said it.

He called the three men out. They came out.

The people gathered around and examined them.

No burn. No smell of fire. Not even their hair was singed.

Their clothes were fine.

The only thing the fire had burned were the ropes that bound them.

The fourth figure was not seen again.

No name given. No explanation offered.

Only the king's words, spoken in confusion and awe from a man who had no category for what he had just witnessed.

Scripture — Daniel 3:25

"He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God."

Reflection

›

The fire burned the ropes but not the people. Sometimes the only thing God destroys is what was holding you captive.

›

The fourth figure appeared only when the heat was at its worst. He doesn't meet us before the furnace. He meets us inside it.
