He didn't know he was a sign. He was just carrying water.
📖Based on Mark 14:13
The Passover was the next day.
The disciples asked where they should go to prepare it.
Jesus didn't give them an address.
He told them to go into the city.
There they would meet a man carrying a pitcher of water.
Follow him.
Into whatever house he enters, go inside and say to the owner of the house: The Teacher asks, Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?
He will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared. Make it ready there.
That was the instruction.
The disciples went into the city.
They found it exactly as he said.
They prepared the Passover.
But the man carrying water.
He never speaks in the text. He has no name. No lines.
He doesn't know he is leading two disciples to the most important meal in human history.
He is just walking through Jerusalem with a water jug.
Doing what he did every day.
In a city full of people doing ordinary things on the day before Passover.
And Jesus had told two disciples: there will be one man among the crowd. A man with a water jug.
Follow him.
Men did not usually carry water in that culture. Women did.
A man with a water jug in a crowd would stand out.
He was easy to find precisely because he was doing something slightly unusual.
And he led them straight to the upper room.
Without knowing it.
Without being asked.
Just by doing his ordinary task on an extraordinary day.
Scripture — Mark 14:13
"And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and saith unto them, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him."
Reflection
›
The unnamed man with the water jug was part of something far larger than his errand. He never knew it.

Some people serve the purposes of God without ever being told that's what they were doing.
