The Transfiguration

His face shone like the sun. The disciples fell on their faces.

📖Based on Matthew 17:2

They had been walking together for months.

They had seen healings. Storms calmed. Water walked on.

But nothing prepared them for the mountain.

Jesus took the three of them up a high mountain alone.

And while they were there, he was transfigured before them.

His face shone like the sun.

His clothes became white as light.

Not white like clean cloth. White like light itself.

And then two figures appeared beside him.

Moses and Elijah.

Moses had been dead for over a thousand years. Elijah had been taken in a chariot but never died in the normal way.

Both of them were there. Talking with Jesus.

Peter, because he didn't know what else to do, offered to build three tabernacles. One for each of them.

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud came over them.

A voice came from the cloud: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear ye him.

The three disciples fell on their faces.

Terrified.

Jesus came and touched them. Told them not to be afraid.

When they looked up, there was no one there but him.

They came down the mountain and he told them to say nothing until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.

They questioned among themselves what rising from the dead meant.

They had just seen Moses and Elijah on a mountaintop. They had heard the voice of God.

And they were still confused about rising from the dead.

That is the nature of the mystery. You can witness something enormous and still not fully hold it.

Scripture — Matthew 17:2

"And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light."

Reflection

›

Moses and Elijah represented the Law and the Prophets. Both pointed to this one person on this one mountain.

›

The disciples fell at the voice of God but rose at the touch of Jesus. That sequence is everything.
