The Walls of Jericho

They walked in circles for seven days. Then they shouted.

📖Based on Joshua 6:20

Jericho was shut up tight.

No one came out. No one went in.

God told Joshua: I have given Jericho into your hand.

Then he gave the instructions.

All the men of war were to march around the city once.

For six days.

No shouting. No noise. No word from anyone.

Just marching. And seven priests with seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark.

For six days, the army walked around the city once a day and went back to camp.

Imagine what Jericho thought.

On the seventh day, they rose at dawn.

They marched around the city seven times.

On the seventh circuit, the priests blew the trumpets.

Joshua told the people: Shout! For the LORD has given you the city.

The people shouted.

A great shout.

And the wall fell down flat.

Every man straight before him went up into the city.

Every man.

The wall didn't have a breach in one section.

It fell flat.

Not by battering rams. Not by undermining the foundation.

By marching. And silence. And then a shout.

Only Rahab's house — built into the wall — stood.

Because of a scarlet thread in her window.

Because she had hidden the spies.

Because she believed the report.

The walls fell because God said they would.

Seven days before the shout, the outcome was already decided.

The march was just the obedience that connected the promise to the reality.

Scripture — Joshua 6:20

"So the people shouted when the priests blew with the trumpets: and it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city."

Reflection

›

Six days of silent marching required more faith than the shout did. The shout was the visible moment. The six days were the hidden one.

›

God gave a military strategy that made no military sense. The obedience was the battle plan.
