The Great Tribulation

The worst suffering in human history. Concentrated into one period.

📖Based on Matthew 24:21

He didn't soften the words.

There was no diplomatic framing. No effort to reduce the weight of what He was about to say.

For then shall be great tribulation.

Not tribulation. Great tribulation.

Such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

A specific, unprecedented, unrepeatable concentration of suffering.

From creation to this moment: nothing like it.

After this moment: nothing like it ever again.

A single, singular window of human history where the pressure of judgment and persecution and cosmic upheaval would converge.

And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved.

No flesh.

Not most flesh. Not many people. No flesh at all.

If the days were allowed to run their natural course, without divine interruption, the end would be the end of everything biological on earth.

But for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

Two words changed everything: elect's sake.

The shortening of the tribulation was not general mercy to humanity.

It was specific mercy. Named mercy. Directed at a specific people who had committed themselves to a specific Lord.

And the tribulation, as unbearable as it would be, would have a limit.

Cut short. Not eliminated. Not avoided. Shortened.

Jesus told them this so that they would understand, when it came, that it was not outside His knowledge.

He had named it before it happened.

He had promised intervention before it was needed.

And he had said: he that endures to the end shall be saved.

The end had a number.

And someone was keeping count.

Scripture — Matthew 24:21

Reflection

›

The great tribulation has a beginning and an end. Nothing in human history that has a beginning and an end is the final word.

›

The shortening of those days for the elect's sake is one of the most personal promises in all of prophecy.
