The Stars Go Dark

Isaiah saw Babylon's end. The sky turned it off.

📖Based on Isaiah 13:10

The oracle against Babylon was not a quiet word.

It was a burden. A weight. Something lifted and carried and finally set down in prophecy.

Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand.

It shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.

Therefore shall all hands be faint.

Every man's heart shall melt.

They shall be afraid. Pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them.

They shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth.

And then the sky.

For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light.

The navigators of nations had always looked up. The stars had been the fixed point. The reference. The map that never changed.

Now they gave no light.

The sun shall be darkened in his going forth.

Not after it rose. In its going forth. As it attempted to rise.

Stopped before it could complete its arc.

And the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

Three of the sky's light sources. All at once. Silent.

And I will punish the world for their evil.

Not just Babylon.

The world.

I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease.

The pride that had built Babylon. The confidence that had said we are here forever. We are central. We are permanent.

The sky going dark was the visual answer to that claim.

You are not permanent.

I can turn off the lights.

And I can do it for a reason.

And when I do, no amount of engineering or architecture or military power will turn them back on.

The stars of heaven were not props.

They were participants.

And they obeyed.

Scripture — Isaiah 13:10

"For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine."

Reflection

›

The darkening of the sky over Babylon is not metaphor. It is cosmological participation in divine judgment.

›

When God judges a civilization, all creation is available to Him as an instrument.
