The White Throne

Heaven and earth fled from His face. They had nowhere to go.

📖Based on Revelation 20:11

There was nowhere to go.

The earth and the heaven tried to flee from the face of him that sat on the throne.

And there was found no place for them.

That image — of the entire physical universe attempting escape and failing — was the first thing John recorded about the great white throne.

And the dead, small and great, stood before God.

Not the living only. Not just the famous, the powerful, the consequential.

Small and great.

The name that nobody remembered. The life that nobody noticed. The quiet existence that left no historical record.

Standing before the throne.

The books were opened.

Not one book. Books. Plural. Every record that needed to exist, existed. Every word spoken, every deed done, every secret held — recorded.

And another book was opened, which is the book of life.

The dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

The sea gave up the dead which were in it.

Death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them.

Every category of the dead. Every burial place. Every form of ending.

All of them standing.

And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire.

This is the second death.

And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

The white throne was not a tribunal of the guilty only.

It was the final accounting of every human life.

And the question at the center of it was not what you did.

It was whose you were.

Scripture — Revelation 20:11

"And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them."

Reflection

›

The white throne is not the beginning of judgment. It is the end of it — the final declaration of what was always true.

›

Every human life will be accounted for. No one is too small to stand there.
