Lazarus Come Forth

He had been dead four days. And then his name was called.

📖Based on John 11:43

He loved them.

Mary and Martha and their brother Lazarus.

When they sent word that Lazarus was sick, Jesus stayed where he was two more days.

He told his disciples: This illness does not lead to death.

He arrived at Bethany and Lazarus had been in the tomb four days.

Martha came out to meet him.

She said: Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

Jesus said: Your brother will rise again.

She said: I know he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.

He said: I am the resurrection and the life.

Mary came and fell at his feet weeping.

The Jews who came with her were weeping.

Jesus, when he saw her weeping, was deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled.

He asked: Where have you laid him?

They said: Come and see.

Jesus wept.

The shortest verse in the Bible.

They said: See how he loved him.

Some said: Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind man also have kept this man from dying?

He came to the tomb.

A cave with a stone laid against it.

He said: Take away the stone.

Martha said: Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.

Jesus said: Did I not tell you that if you believed you would see the glory of God?

They took away the stone.

He lifted his eyes and prayed.

He thanked God for hearing him.

Then he cried with a loud voice:

Lazarus, come out.

The man who had died came out.

His hands and feet bound with linen strips.

His face wrapped with a cloth.

Jesus said: Unbind him. Let him go.

He was dead.

Four days dead.

And his name was called.

And he came.

Scripture — John 11:43

"And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth."

Reflection

›

He wept before he raised him. The power and the grief lived in the same moment, in the same person.

›

He called him by name. In the resurrection, no one is summoned anonymously.
