But the body was not.📖Based on John 20:6Mary Magdalene had run back with the news.Peter and the other disciple ran to the tomb. The other one outran Peter and got there first. He stooped and looked in but didn't go inside. He saw the linen clothes lying there. Then Peter arrived and went straight in.He saw the linen clothes lying. And the napkin that had been on Jesus's face — not lying with the linen clothes, but folded together and placed to one side.Folded.Not ripped off. Not thrown aside in the rush of resurrection.Folded. Set apart. Left deliberately. There is a tradition in Jewish culture that when a master left a table, a folded napkin meant he was coming back. But the text doesn't explain that. The text just says it was folded. And says that when the other disciple went in, he saw and believed. Not after seeing Jesus. Not after hearing angels. He saw the arrangement of cloth in an empty room. And believed. The body that had been wrapped in those linens was simply no longer inside them. They hadn't been unwound. They weren't scattered across the floor. They were lying as if the body had passed through them.Or as if what had been wrapped in them had changed into something that no longer needed wrapping.Peter saw the same thing and the text says nothing about what he concluded in that moment.Just that he saw it.And went home wondering.Scripture — John 20:6"Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie."Reflection›The folded napkin is the quietest detail in the resurrection account. And perhaps the most personal.›The arrangement of those linens is a message written in cloth: this was not theft. This was transformation.resurrectionempty tomblinenPeterbeliefShare This StoryShare on WhatsApp🔗 Copy Link← Previous storyThe Torn VeilNext story →Peter Walks on WaterRelated StoriesThe Road to EmmausLuke 24:16→Peter Walks on WaterMatthew 14:29→The Coin in the FishMatthew 17:27→More from this series: all biblical mysteries · all Bible stories
